Question 6 of 6 / Measure

Measuring what AI answers say.

Mentions, citations, impressions and visits are four different numbers. Where each one comes from, and why a single run tells you almost nothing.

Sources read on 24 September 2026, next review by 23 December 2026. Nothing here promises rankings or AI citations.

THE SHORT ANSWER

How do you know whether AI answers mention you?

Ask the same questions on a schedule and count how often you are mentioned and cited, then read your analytics for the visits that get through. Answers vary from run to run and AI visits are undercounted, so read trends, not single results.

Across dozens of questions run many times, how often you appear is a reasonable measure. A ranking position in an AI answer is not.

How inconsistent AI answers are

01 / On HubSpot and beyond

Five places
to look.

From the question set to the form on your contact page.

  1. 01

    Write the questions buyers ask

Twenty to fifty real questions: about your brand, your category and the problem you solve. Keep the set fixed, so this month compares with last month.

Leave with A question set you can repeat

  2. 02

    Run them on a schedule

HubSpot AEO runs prompts daily against ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and turns them into a visibility score. Guard tracks mentions every week beside its site checks.

Leave with Mentions and citations over time

  3. 03

    Open Search Console's AI report

Google's generative AI reports show impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clicks from AI features stay inside the Web search type of the Performance report.

Leave with How often Google's AI shows you

  4. 04

    Open Bing's AI Performance

Bing Webmaster Tools shows how often your pages are cited in AI answers, and which URLs. It has been in public preview since 10 February 2026.

Leave with Your citations in Copilot and Bing

  5. 05

Tag what you can and ask about the rest

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends. Add ChatGPT or another AI assistant to How did you hear about us on your HubSpot forms, because many AI visits arrive without a referrer.

Leave with AI visits you can count

02 / The evidence

What the measuring
tools can and cannot see.

Each card quotes the organisation behind the number.

01 / VARIANCE

The same question rarely gets the same answer.

SparkToro: "600 volunteers ran 12 different prompts through each of the 3 tools a combined 2,961 times." AIs "rarely give the same list of brands or recommendations twice (<1 in 100 times, no matter the question)".

Why this matters

Rand Fishkin's conclusion: "visibility % across dozens to hundreds of prompts run multiple times is a reasonable metric". A ranking position is not.

02 / GOOGLE

Search Console now shows AI impressions.

Google: "The new Search Console reports are designed to give you dedicated views of your impressions within generative AI features on Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode".

Why this matters

Rolled out to all sites by 31 August 2026. The report lists impressions, not clicks, and does not separate AI Overviews from AI Mode.

03 / BING

Bing shows your citations.

Bing: "For the first time, you can understand how often your content is cited in generative answers, with clear visibility into which URLs are referenced and how citation activity changes over time."

Why this matters

Still in preview. Bing added to the report on 16 June 2026.

04 / OPENAI

ChatGPT tags the visits it sends.

OpenAI: "ChatGPT automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs, enabling clear tracking and analysis of inbound traffic from ChatGPT search results."

03 / Questions

Fair questions,
straight answers.

What people ask when the numbers move.

Why do my numbers change every day?

Because the answers do. In SparkToro's study the same list of brands came back less than once in a hundred runs. Compare the same question set over weeks, and read the trend.

Mention or citation: which matters?

A mention names you; a citation links to your page as a source. Both count, differently: a mention can build demand, a citation can send a visit. A tool that does not separate them hides the difference.

Does Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews?

Not separately. Google says sites in AI Overviews and AI Mode "are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console", in the Performance report's Web search type. The newer AI report shows impressions.

Is the free AI Search Grader enough?

It is a first picture. HubSpot calls it "a free, one-time check that reveals what ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini say about you". A trend needs the same questions run again and again.

What does Guard add?

Guard checks the technical side every week: crawler access, structured data, speed and accessibility. It also tracks whether real AI answers mention you, so a drop can be traced to a cause on the site or ruled out.
