Question 5 of 6 / Prove

Evidence a reader can check.

A source next to the claim, a name behind it and a date on it. What Google, Bing and Perplexity ask for, and how to do it on HubSpot.

Sources read on 24 September 2026, next review by 23 December 2026. Nothing here promises rankings or AI citations.

THE SHORT ANSWER

How do you show the evidence behind a claim?

Put the source next to the claim, say who stands behind it, and date it. Google asks whether a page shows clear sourcing and who wrote it, and Bing says cited sources help build trust when an answer reuses your content.

Evidence helps a reader judge a page. No search engine promises that it earns a citation.

Creating helpful content

01 / On HubSpot

Five habits
for every claim.

They work on any page. Answerable's evidence cards do them for you.

  1. 01

    One claim, one sentence

State the claim with its number and its scope, so it stands on its own when quoted. Bing asks that facts are explicit and that key statements do not rely on implied content.

Leave with A sentence that survives being quoted

  2. 02

    Link the primary source

Link the page that says it first, not a post that repeats it, and note the day you read it.

Leave with A source a reader can open

  3. 03

    Name who stands behind it

A person with a byline, or the organisation. On a HubSpot blog, the post's blog author is the byline, with a bio and profile links.

Leave with A name, not an anonymous page

  4. 04

Date it, and change the date only for real changes

Show a visible Published or Last updated date that matches the date in the data. Change it when the content changes, not to look fresh.

Leave with A date that means something

  5. 05

Review on a schedule, and correct in public

Re-read each source every 90 days. If a claim no longer holds, change it and say so.

Leave with Evidence that stays true

02 / The evidence

What the engines ask
of a page they trust.

Each card quotes the organisation's own page.

01 / GOOGLE

Clear sourcing is a trust question.

Google asks: "Does the content present information in a way that makes you want to trust it, such as clear sourcing, evidence of the expertise involved, background about the author".

Why this matters

Accurate is the word that matters: a real person or the organisation, never an invented expert.

03 / BING

Cited sources build trust in AI answers.

Bing: "Examples, data, and cited sources help build trust when content is reused in AI-generated answers."

04 / DATES

A visible date should match the data.

Google: "Add a user-visible date to the page and feature it prominently." And: "Ensure that the date (and optional time and timezone) match between the equivalent user-visible and structured values."

03 / Questions

Fair questions,
straight answers.

What people ask about evidence and authorship.

Should the author be a person or the company?

Either can be honest. In schema.org, an author can be a Person or an Organization. Name a person when a person wrote it and answers for it, and the company when the company does. Never invent an expert.

Does updating the date make a page look fresh to AI?

Changing only the date is what Google warns against: "Are you changing the date of pages to make them seem fresh when the content has not substantially changed?" Update the page when the facts change, then the date.

What counts as a primary source?

The organisation that decides or measured the thing: Google for Google Search, OpenAI for OpenAI's crawlers, the authors for a study. A post quoting them points to the source; it is not the source.

Do answer engines check who wrote a page?

Some say so. Perplexity labels some cited sites after a review that asks "Does the site correct its mistakes?" and "Does it say who wrote each piece?"

Can structured data carry the source?

Yes. schema.org's citation is "A citation or reference to another creative work, such as another publication, web page, scholarly article, etc." Answerable's evidence cards publish each claim with its citation and owner. No search engine promises a feature for it.
